  • Issues Facing Virginia's Small BusinessesHere's a look at some of the issues NFIB/Virginia will be facing:

Expanding Obamacare’s Medicaid Expansion in Virginia
    • NFIB/Virginia opposes expanding Medicaid in Virginia as set out in the federal healthcare law
    • Small-business owners realize that there is no such thing as free money from the federal government and any burden that comes as a result of Medicaid expansion will come from their bottom line.
    • NFIB/Virginia will continue to fight any expansion of Medicaid until substantial and long lasting cost saving reforms are enacted.
    BPOL/Gross Receipts Tax Relief
    • The Business Professional and Occupational License is an onerous tax on the gross receipts of a business regardless of whether that business has made a profit for the year.
    • While NFIB/Virginia has been successful in securing legislation that provides options for localities to adopt that would provide some tax relief, many have chosen not to take advantage of those options.
    • NFIB/Virginia will continue to fight for the full elimination of the BPOL.
    Workers' Compensation Reform
    • NFIB/Virginia will continue to work with the state legislators to ensure Virginia’s workers' comp program remains one of the most efficient and affordable in the nation.
    • We will pursue cost saving reforms to rein in the recent rise in escalating medical costs for Workers Comp procedures in Virginia. Today, medical costs related to workers comp claims are as high as double our neighboring states.
    Pro-Union/Anti-Business Legislation
    • Indications point to an increase of anti-business legislation being proposed by labor unions.
    • In 2014, NFIB/Virginia defeated efforts to increase the minimum wage and require mandatory paid leave for employees that were supported by the labor unions and their allies.
    • With 2015 an important election year for the General Assembly, there will be a bigger push by the Unions to pass laws that will negatively impact small businesses.
