Many small businesses use vehicles in operations, meaning rising fuel prices have had a significant impact on their balance sheet. The federal excise tax on gasoline has been 18.4 cents per gallon since 1993, currently representing about 6% of the cost of a gallon at the pump. Recent proposals from leaders on both sides of the Congressional aisle have threatened an increase in this number.
Any rise in the federal gas tax would be a significant burden on job creators across the country. According to NFIB’s research, nearly all (96%) of small employers reported higher gas and fuel prices have some degree of a negative impact on their business. For these reasons, NFIB opposes a proposed tax increase on small business owners.
