Pre-Recount, Post-Election Report on New Mexico State House of Representatives

Earlier on Election Night it looked like the Democrats had a chance to actually pick up seats in the State House, however, as all the votes were counted it looks like Republicans flipped three seats (pending recounts), and Democrats flipped two seats. This would be a net gain of one for the Republicans. The composition in the 2023 Legislative Session (pending recounts) would be 44 Democrats to 26 Republicans. Flipped Seat to Republican

Alan Martinez (R) won an open seat that was previously held by former Representative Damon Ely (D)

  • House District 68

Robert Moss (R) won an open seat that was vacated by outgoing Representative Karen Bash (D) – RECOUNT WILL HAPPEN

  • House District 32

Jenifer Jones (R) won appears to have defeated incumbent Representative Candie Sweetser (D) – RECOUNT WILL HAPPEN

Flipped Seat to Democratic
  • House District 44

Challenger Kathleen Cates (D) defeated long-time incumbent Jane Powdrell-Culbert (R)

  • House District 38

Tara Jaramillo (D) won an open seat that was vacated by outgoing Representative Rebecca Dow (R)

New Legislators Elected The trend of significant turnover in the Legislature continues with the incoming class of New Mexico House members. In total, there will be 14 new members in the House (20 percent of the House) with eight new Republicans and six new Democrats. New Republicans

  • House District 68 – Separated by 12 votes
