NFIB Reaction to Governor Phil Murphy’s FY 2026 Budget Address

The governor announced a $58 billion state spending plan.

TRENTON, NJ (Feb. 25, 2025) The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), the nation’s leading small business advocacy association with thousands of members in the Garden State, released the following statement by NFIB New Jersey State Director Eileen Kean regarding Governor Phil Murphy’s budget address to the legislature this afternoon:

“NFIB and small business owners across the state were cautiously optimistic that Gov. Murphy’s budget plan would spare Main Street businesses and taxpayers from hikes to the state’s already steep tax burden, and perhaps might even provide some relief,” said Kean. “And while small business owners are pleased that the governor did not propose any broad-based tax increases, it is still regrettable that he has included numerous new taxes and fees in his budget. Any honest look at the state budgets of the of the past eight years makes clear that New Jersey government has a spending problem, not a revenue problem. If New Jersey is to improve its affordability and competitiveness, lawmakers must come to grips with this reality. Now, New Jersey small business owners look to the governor and legislators to work responsibly to enact a budget that is fiscally sound without adding to the tax burdens on job creators and taxpayers.”
