Did You Know:
Gas Tax Hike –
A 23-cent gas tax increase proposal in Trenton would more than double the state’s current rate. New Jersey’s gas tax ranks second-lowest in the U.S., but the proposed increase would make it the seventh-highest in the country. Increasing the gas tax from 14.5-cents per-gallon to 37.5 cents would increase costs for many small businesses and would have a significantly negative impact on tourism in the state.
$15 Minimum Wage –
Legislation to raise New Jersey’s minimum wage to $15 an hour is quickly being pushed through the legislature without much debate. This radical wage hike would crush many small businesses who are adjusting to constantly changing regulations and other labor requirements at the state and local level in. In a recent report released by the NFIB Research Foundation it’s estimated that this hike will cost the state 70,000 jobs over 10 years.
Mandated Paid Leave –
Under the proposed legislation, businesses with 10 or fewer employees would be required to allow workers to earn roughly 40 hours of paid leave. The total amount would increase to 72 hours of paid leave for businesses with more than 10 employees. This mandate would significantly increase costs and will increase the administrative burden on small businesses. In 2013, a NFIB study on a similar proposal found that more than 25,000 New Jersey jobs could be lost within 10 years of this law being implemented. The study also found that New Jersey real output could decrease by more than $18.1 billion.
