NFIB Joins Fight for Prop. 13 Coalition

Date: August 30, 2019

“Property owners will have no choice but to pass along higher property taxes to small businesses by raising rents”

It’s official: NFIB has joined an impressive coalition of individuals and organizations united in their goal to protect Proposition 13 against continued assaults by ballot initiatives, the Legislature, local governments, and misguided cause groups. At a news conference, August 29, near the State Capitol, NFIB California State Director John Kabateck joined a bipartisan group of leaders from around the state to announce why it was vital for small business to get involved.

“Many small businesses are renters – they don’t own the property, which makes them solely responsible for all costs, including rent,” said Kabateck. “Without Prop 13’s protections, property owners will have no choice but to pass along higher property taxes to small businesses by raising rents.  If they manage to stay in business, which isn’t a guarantee, small business owners will be forced to increase their prices to consumers just to make ends meet.”

Joining Kabateck at the news conference were:

  • Rob Lapsley, President, California Business Roundtable
  • Don Perata, Former Senate President Pro Tem
  • Alice Huffman, President, California State Conference of the NAACP
  • Robert Apodaca, Executive Director, United Latinos Vote
  • Fred Romero, Former State Commander, American GI Forum of California
  • Robert Gutierrez, President and CEO, California Taxpayers Association

According to the coalition’s website, “Fight for Prop 13 is a grassroots coalition of consumers, homeowners, renters, veterans, senior citizens, taxpayers, small businesses, social justice and faith-based organizations throughout California committed to fighting increased property taxes, which would make California’s affordability crisis and high tax burden even worse. We educate voters on the benefits of Prop 13 and activate them to oppose attacks on Prop 13 from the legislature, courts or state and local ballot measures.”

NFIB will continue to report on the progress of the coalition’s activities on this webpage.
