NFIB fighting to preserve one of the remaining protections in a high-tax state
Assembly Constitutional Amendment 1 is moving through the Legislature. It could come up for an Assembly Floor vote as early as Thursday, August 29. If passed it would put a serious dent in Proposition 13.
“In California, which is home to the highest sales tax, income tax, capital gains tax, corporate tax, and gas tax, taxpayers are fortunate to have one remaining protection: Proposition 13,” wrote NFIB California Policy Director Shawn Lewis in a letter in opposition to ACA 1 sponsor, Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry. “Approved by the voters in 1978, Prop. 13 included critical property tax protections, but also etched into the California Constitution a 2/3 vote requirement to raise taxes. This legislation, ACA 1, would undo this critical taxpayer protection, which would devastate struggling small businesses and working families across this state.”
