Sales Tax Refund Petition Signed by Governor

Date: March 14, 2018

In addition to passing four bills that would help the state’s small businesses on “Small Business Day” in the Alabama House, legislators have also given final passage to another NFIB-approved bill, recently signed into law by Gov. Ivey.

Act No. 2018-180, sponsored by Sen. Steve Livingston (Scottsboro), will reduce the amount of paperwork and time associated with the current requirement that consumers secure a joint petition for sales tax refunds. Under the measure, consumers will now be able to file a direct petition for all refunds, and consumers will be able to claim refund reimbursement for taxes paid in excess of $25 directly from the Alabama Department of Revenue. The bill was reviewed and approved by the NFIB Tax Advisory Committee for its benefit to Alabama small business owners.
