Small Business Owners Meet with Representatives in State Capitols

Date: February 21, 2019

At NFIB Small Business Days, members share important issues with local officials.

In state capitols across the country, NFIB members are meeting with their governors, state lawmakers, and other elected officials at Small Business Days at the Capitol.

Tim Goodrich, NFIB’s executive director of state policy, said the events are an annual highlight for members.

“Small Business Days at the Capitol offer NFIB members a unique opportunity to openly discuss matters affecting them with state government officials,” Goodrich said.

During these Small Business Days, NFIB members are able to ensure that the issues that matter most to them are front and center before lawmakers.

NFIB’s Texas State Director Annie Spilman hosted Texas’ recent Small Business Day at the Capitol, which was attended by NFIB CEO and President Juanita D. Duggan. Spilman says Small Business Days are an essential part of the NFIB membership.

“Our small business members don’t have the time or resources to navigate a confusing and contradictory patchwork of local ordinances that go above and beyond the state requires,” says NFIB’s Texas State Director Annie Spilman. “Small businesses need consistency,” Spilman said. “Our members believe employment regulations should be set by the Legislature and applied evenly statewide.”

Small businesses are a powerful and trusted force, both economically and within their communities. In fact, according to a recent report by the Small Business Administration, small businesses account for 44 percent of U.S. economic activity. And in an additional NFIB-commissioned report conducted by Morning Consult, 82 percent of American adults say that small business owners have a strong understanding of their local community.
