NFIB Member Profile: Wood Fired Pizza on Ohio's North Shore

Date: January 19, 2016 Last Edit: January 21, 2016

Wood and Wine is a full service restaurant featuring wood
fired neopolitan pizzas in a 900 degree oven. They currently have Lorain’s only
certified sommelier wine specialist offering over 200 wines to choose from.

Ron Miller has been the owner of Wood & Wine since
2010. Ron began in the enterprise as a partner in the business, and eventually
bought the land and the building. He saw the lack of a restaurant in the area
that specialized in this cuisine and came up with the idea for Wood & Wine to
specialize in wine service and wood fire cooking.

There are currently 39 employees at Wood & Wine. Due
to regulations that inhibit growth, Ron never wants to go over 50 employees. He
believes the best part about being a small-business owner in the restaurant
industry is that it’s nice to get to know your customers on a personal basis. The
personal relationships be has built with his clientele is another reason why he
likes to keep his business manageable at its current size.

Ron joined NFIB after the local sales representatives approached
him about joining. He remains a member with the organization because NFIB
supports his business in two ways: it is a productive way to receive
information regarding small businesses, and NFIB’s presence in the legislative
system.  Wood & Wine also serves as
the location of NFIB/Ohio’s Lorain County Area Action Council.

He realizes being a small-business owner is hard work and
his advice to any individual starting a small business is to “do your due
diligence.”
