WV Legislature Passes Balanced Budget Resolution

Date: March 12, 2016 Last Edit: March 13, 2016

Gil White, state director of the National Federation of Independent Business, released the following statement today, March 12, concerning HCR 36, a resolution supporting a federal balanced budget amendment:

“On behalf of our members, I want to thank the Legislature for passing HCR 36. Our members believe Congress needs to learn a lesson from small business and start living within its means.

“Congress thinks if you want to spend more money, you either raise taxes or go deeper and deeper into debt and let our kids and grandkids sort it out later, but that has to stop.

“HCR 36 authorizes state delegates to attend a limited convention of the states, as authorized by Article V of the U.S. Constitution, solely for the purpose of proposing a federal balanced budget amendment.

“West Virginia is the 28th state to authorize such a convention. Thirty-four states have to sign off on the plan before a convention can take place, and 38 states would have to approve any agreed-upon language in order to ratify the amendment.

“If small-business owners in West Virginia can stick to a budget, so can our politicians in Washington.”
