Building a Business With Goats: Colorado Teen Wins NFIB Scholarship

Date: June 02, 2015

Baca Boers breeds and sells goats for market and show.

Breanna Hendricks grew up watching her grandparents raise goats, and two years ago, she tried her hand at raising her own. That hobby led her to create her business, Baca Boers, which breeds and raises goats for market and show.

Prior to Baca Boers, anyone looking to purchase a show goat in Hendricks’ hometown of Springfield, Colorado, had to go some distance away. Hendricks saw the need and an opportunity, and her business now provides the local community with quality show and market goats.

In April, Hendricks was honored for her work with a college scholarship, the NFIB/El Pomar Foundation Young Entrepreneur Award.

One of the most difficult parts of being a business owner for Hendricks are the expenses. She had to spend over $5,000 just on hay last year as a result of the drought and feed shortages. But Hendricks has persevered and achieved a successful business with the support and help of her grandparents, who are her primary mentors. Another big influence has been her high school entrepreneurship teacher, who has encouraged her and been a strong role model in the community.

Hendricks will continue to raise goats when she leaves for the University of Colorado Denver in the fall. She plans to study physical therapy, and expects to receive her doctorate in five and half years. After that, she hopes to practice physical therapy back in Springfield, continue raising goats, and serve as a high school track coach.

Hendricks’ advice to other young entrepreneurs is to pursue your passions. “Even though you’re from a small community or little town, don’t think you’re not going to do something big.”
