Aetna and UnitedHealthCare have already announced their plans to leave Virginia’s Affordable Care Act marketplace, and now a third has joined them in declining to offer individual health insurance plans in the state: Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield.
The reason continues to be the same: Uncertainty surrounding the law at the federal level has continued the volatility in the individual market, driving up costs. WDBJ7 reported on the statement from Anthem, which is familiar to those made by other insurers across the country. Anthem said: “Planning and pricing for ACA-compliant health plans has becoming increasingly difficult due to a shrinking and deteriorating individual market, as well as continual changes and uncertainty in federal operations, rules and guidance, including cost sharing reduction subsidies and the restoration of taxes on fully insured coverage.”
The pullout will affect more than 200,000 Virginians.
