NFIB Expands “The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly” Bill List
70 bills identify critical challenges and opportunities in legislature for small business

SACRAMENTO, Calif., March 16, 2017 – Today NFIB California updated and expanded “The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly” bill list which identifies pending legislation which will have the greatest impact, either negative or positive, to the 3.5 million small businesses across California.

“In under three months, the California Legislature has introduced roughly 2,500 bills, with about 500 of those being ‘spot’ bills. For this reason, it is critical for our membership and all small business owners to have a resource to navigate the most significant legislation, and The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly list does exactly that,” commented NFIB/CA State Executive Director Tom Scott. “Although there exist important bills beyond this list, these 70 truly focus the most significant impacting our small business job creators.

“While we have identified several bad and ugly bills, we are encouraged by some good bills from both sides of the aisle. Half of all the bills on our list are good, and of those 35 bills, nearly 50% are authored by Democrats and 50% are authored by Republicans. This tells us there should be nothing partisan about commonsense solutions to support the engine of the California economy: small business. Issues like regulatory reform, legal reform, and tax relief should be areas we can come together to proactively support small business,” added Scott.

“With that said, there is no shortage of bad and ugly bills we are working hard to defeat. New employer mandates and costs identified in the expanded list will pile-on new burdens for our struggling small businesses across the state,” concluded Scott.

Currently, the list includes 70 bills total (35 good; 12 bad; and 23 ugly). This list reflects proposals from the 2017-2018 legislative session, and as new bills are introduced or morphed into substantively new bills, this list will be updated.
