Gregg Thompson, state director of NFIB/North Carolina, was on “Capitol Tonight” on Time Warner Cable News to explain why small-business owners oppose so-called ban-the-box legislation.
If passed, employers would be banned from asking about a job applicant’s criminal history until late in the interview process. Thompson said small businesses especially have a
right to know who they’re hiring. Small businesses especially can’t afford to
invest the time and money interviewing a candidate whose criminal record would
exclude them from being considered for the job.
Not all small
businesses have the additional resources to deal with an extended hiring
process, Thompson said. Small businesses don’t necessarily have HR departments, he said. Often, hiring decisions are handled solely by the owner of the business. If ban-the-box
were to pass, Thompson said, employers could potentially waste time on candidates who don’t qualify and possibly miss out on better candidates.
