Trade with China continues to grow every year.
Gov. Kate Brown met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sept. 22 to discuss green technology and economic development opportunities.
The meeting, which was part of a larger discussion between the U.S. and China to bolster energy efficiency, comes as Oregon businesses continue to expand its trade relationship with China through exports. Trade with China has grown every year from $2.6 billion in 2012 to $4.2 billion in 2014.
“I think it’s great for Oregon to have things with ‘Made in Oregon’ stickers going across borders wherever those borders might be,” said Anthony Smith, NFIB Oregon state director.
According to Business Oregon, the state’s economic development agency, computer and electronic products make up the majority—almost 58 percent—of the state’s trade with China. Other exports include local food, seafood, wine and craft brews.
Business Oregon estimates that more than 1,000 local companies do business with China. Exporting across international borders is ultimately good for the state, according to the agency.
Businesses that seek to reach a broader customer base can refer to the U.S. Small Business Administration for assistance on how to take their merchandising to the next level. Business Oregon also offers a variety of advice and programs, including funding, which are designed to help companies enter the global markets.
Some of the types of assistance offered include export counseling, market research and grants for participation to various trade development activities, including trade shows.
