SMALL BUSINESS TO LAWMAKERS: YOU’RE IN A HOLE—STOP DIGGING

BANGOR (May 27, 2015): The National Federation of Independent
Business (NFIB) weighed in on a movement to encourage a Constitutional
convention in order to achieve a Balanced Federal Budget Amendment to the Constitution
today. NFIB has long supported Congressional action to pass a balanced budget
amendment and is now standing behind Maine’s efforts through the Article V
process as well.

“Small business owners are very concerned about the federal
government’s failure to address the basic budgeting that every citizen and
small business must adhere to in their daily lives.  The State of Maine and other states must
balance their budgets.  Small business
owners must balance their budgets or risk losing their business.  Individuals and families also must balance
their budgets or risk becoming insolvent.” Said NFIB Maine State Director,
David Clough.

Insurmountable debt at the federal level, more and more of
which is owned by foreigners, consumes a larger percentage of the federal
budget each year. The damaging effects of this massive debt will no doubt be
detrimental to futures generations to come that will see their lives and
choices controlled by the inability to manage federal spending in the present
day.

“Small business owners have to make tough decisions every
day to manage their business and family budgets.  Governors and legislators in states across
the nation are also held to balanced budget standards and yet the President and
Congress continue year after year to write themselves a blank check.” Continued
Clough, “While there are some circumstances unique to a federal budget, they
can be accounted for. Throughout our nation’s history, through wars and
economic troubles, our federal finances were controlled. However, in recent
decades, we have begun rapidly digging ourselves into a deep fiscal hole. As
the saying goes, if you are in a hole, stop digging!”
