NFIB/TEXAS RESPONDS TO STATE OF THE STATE ADDRESS

Date: February 17, 2015

(AUSTIN, TX) Feb. 17, 2015 — National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB)/Texas, the state’s leading small business association, issued the following statement in response to Governor Greg Abbott’s State of the State address today.
“Governor Abbott’s plan for $2 billion reduction in franchise tax is congruent with our call for bringing long due tax relief to our small business owners,” said Will Newton, NFIB/Texas Executive Director. “After more than seven years of NFIB/Texas battling the franchise tax, we are encouraged to hear the Governor support taking action in reducing this tax and hope that it could mean a repeal of this onerous tax via a phase out. We will remain vigilant throughout the rest of this 84th Legislative Session with boots on the ground at the Capitol, ensuring that small business voice is not lost, as they are the economic backbone of our great state.”

“Additionally, in a recent poll of NFIB small business owners, businesses cited low tax rates and smaller government as top qualifications for a friendly business climate. We applaud Governor Abbott’s commitment to do just that through government transparency and reducing the franchise and property tax burden on small business owners.”
NFIB has 24,000 dues-paying members in Texas representing a cross-section of the state’s economy.
