NFIB/NY Responds to Tentative Legislative Deal on Property Tax Relief

Date: June 23, 2015

ALBANY (June 23, 2015) – All of the following may
be attributed to Mike Durant, State Director of NFIB in response to the
announced tentative deal on legislative issues

“As we await the details on an apparent agreement regarding
many issues facing New Yorkers, news that the property tax cap may be extended
with modifications is troubling.  With more than $7 billion in savings,
the property tax cap has been arguably the most important achievement by the
Cuomo Administration.   The property tax cap must be a permanent
fixture in New York as is without changes.  At a minimum, any extension of
the property tax cap should include a year separation from the expiration of
any rent control deal, again, without any carve outs.   Additionally,
NFIB has long opposed the cost shift methodology of a ‘circuit breaker” concept
and are very concerned that this has been alluded to as part of this broad
package of legislative deals.  Make no mistake, a ‘circuit breaker’ is a
gimmick disguised as meaningful property tax relief.  We anxiously await
further details and clarification and will weigh in accordingly.”
