ServiceMaster Clean is a family run business that was
started in 1965. They provide residential and commercial cleaning services,
along with fire and water disaster recovery. According to the Vice President of the
company, Mike Klemen, 70% of their services are now made up of janitorial
services.
The business currently has 45 employees including Mike’s
wife, Beth, as owner, and their daughter who runs their Business Services administrative
department. Kleman acquired the business
in 1998 and became an NFIB member soon after. Two years later, the company was
moved to a larger facility in Lima, Ohio. They serve West Central Ohio including
Allen, Putnam, and Van Wert counties.
Kleman was first attracted to NFIB after a fellow business
owner/member introduced him to the Lima Area Action Council. He believes “NFIB
provides a consistent and balanced message, leading the charge on important
issues affecting small business.” Kleman also enjoys the networking
opportunities the Area Action Council provides.
Numerous challenges affect how ServiceMaster operates,
including the looming taxes for a 50-employee threshold from the Healthcare
Reform Act. With 45 employees currently,
he is unsure how much they can afford to expand. Another issue they are facing is municipal tax
reform because of the inconsistency between municipalities, and Mike is happy
to see NFIB as one of the leaders in reforming this system.
Lastly, Kleman believes that everyone should play by the
same set of rules, whether it’s between the public and private sector, or even
among industry competition.
Despite challenges facing his business, Kleman loves being
able to give back to the community and help his employees. He also enjoys adjusting his own schedule,
allowing him to spend time with family whenever needed. He added, “I enjoy the challenge – it never
gets boring.”
