JOAQUIN AND NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION COLLIDE

HARTFORD (October 1,
2015): As Hurricane Joaquin continues to leave everyone on the eastern seaboard
guessing where it will make the largest impact, the National Federation of
Independent Business (NFIB) is imploring its members in the state of
Connecticut to pay close attention to the path of the storm and regardless,
stay prepared to absorb the impact of a disaster in the event one occurs.

“Although Joaquin is
not currently forecasted to directly impact our state, the storm track and
forecast for this storm remains an evolving situation, so this is a great time
to practice disaster preparedness and remind our members of its importance,”
according to NFIB Connecticut state director, Andrew Markowski. “There are many
actions that a business owner can take to ensure that if a major weather event
does occur, their employees and their business capitol are protected.
Small business owners in Connecticut know all too well from significant weather
events in the past few years the importance of being prepared.”

FEMA deemed
September National Preparedness Month to bring attention to disaster
preparedness and yesterday ended their grassroots campaign entitled, “America’s
PrepareAthon.” This nationwide movement to get individuals, families,
organizations and whole communities better prepared for emergencies ended in a
National Day of Action where they encourage American’s across the country to be
well equipped when faced with adversity.

“Continuity in the
face of unforeseen disruption is vital to our members. Business interruption
can be prevented or at the very least kept to a minimum when small employers
are organized prior to an event whether it be Joaquin or something else.
Communications plans with employees and safeguarding vital documents for
businesses are a great start to preparing for an emergency,” continued
Markowski. “Significant weather events are unfortunately part of life here in
New England but small businesses are the cornerstone of our communities and
when they are able to open their doors swiftly after a storm or other event they
breathe life back in to the place they call home and help support the recovery
of their cities, towns and neighborhoods.”
