NFIB/Michigan Leadership Council Young Entrepreneur Award: Austin Dudas of Indie Dev Austin

Date: May 19, 2015

How did you come to start Indy Dev Austin?

I started Indie Dev Austin in November of 2013 when I was 16 years old. I had been making computer games for several years and posting them online for others to play, and one day I received an email from a company that was interested in putting one of my games on their website. That’s when I realized I could turn my hobby into a business and started Indie Dev Austin.

What is your most popular product?

Indie Dev Austin’s most popular product is the game Shark Swim, although our new game Busy as a Bee is expected to pass it in sales soon.

What is your business model? Do you have any employees? How many hours a week do you work?

Indie Dev Austin’s business model is to create mobile web games and sell licenses of them to other companies all over the world so they can put our games on their website. Currently, I have no employees. The amount of hours I work during a week varies quite heavily due to school and sports, but on average I work about 15 hours per week.

What’s the biggest thing you’ve learned about business and life from starting a business at such a young age?

The biggest thing I’ve learned about business and life from starting my business is to be ambitious. I feel that a lot of people don’t try things because they don’t think they’re capable of them, but I’ve learned it’s always worth it to give it a shot. This attitude has contributed tremendously to the creation and success of Indie Dev Austin.

What are your plans post graduation?

After graduation, I would like to start a new business. Indie Dev Austin is an awesome company for where I’m at in my life now, but after learning so many new things throughout college I think I will have the opportunity to start something bigger and better. [He also plans to attend University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.]
