NASHVILLE, Aug. 9, 2013 — Unlike a lot of business groups, NFIB doesn’t speak for a single industry. Our members come from a cross section of the state’s economy.
“NFIB is different than other advocacy groups, which this pie chart reflects,” said Jim Brown, state director of NFIB/Tennessee. “We’re a unique general-interest advocacy organization with very diverse membership across many categories of the independent business community.”
According to the latest breakdown of NFIB/Tennessee’s membership:
- 25 percent are in the service sector
- 25 percent, retail
- 14 percent, construction
- 11 percent, manufacturing
- 10 percent, wholesale
- 8 percent, real estate/insurance
- 4 percent, agriculture
- 3 percent, transportation
And unlike other business groups, NFIB doesn’t have a board of directors that dictates policy. Our positions are based solely on a consensus of our members. We ballot our members at least once a year on state and federal issues and don’t take a position unless a large majority of them agree.
