Call to Action on Senate Bill 64

Date: March 09, 2014

In his latest report from Juneau, State Director Denny DeWitt urges NFIB members to call the Senate Finance Committee to ask lawmakers not to increase the felony threshold above $750.

Senate Bill 64 was taken up in Senate Finance again this week. While Sen. John Coghill is working to hold the felony threshold at $750, the Senate Finance Committee seems determined to increase it. The committee will take public testimony beginning at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 11.
We need NFIB members to call in to say why greater increases are bad for their businesses. Here are at least four reasons that you might use as a thought, then add comments specific to your business.
Remember: NFIB will accept the increase to $750, but oppose anything above that number.
Business Licensing
House Bill 32, changing the business license requirement for a license for every line of business to one license for a business doing business under one name, passed the House on a 35-to-0 vote March 3. It is now in the Senate Labor & Commerce Committee.
Workers’ Compensation Premiums
NFIB is lobbying for passage of House Bill 316, which would change the basis for paying workers compensation health services from the outdated “usual and customary” method to the “resource based relative value scale” method. We believe that this updating in the payment methodology for workers medical treatment will allow more reasonable payment rates for those services. NFIB has sent a letter of support to the committee members hearing the bill.
Regulations
House Bill 140 will be heard in House Finance on Thursday, March 13. This bill will have regulators include information on the cost to the private sector in the regulation adoption process. It is supported by NFIB.
