Bluestone Perennials – Over 40 Years of Planting Memories

Date: March 26, 2015

Bluestone Perennials, currently owned by Bill Boonstra, has
grown to be one of the largest mail order nurseries in the country. Bluestone began
operations in 1972 after Bill’s father, who was working at another nursery, saw
an opportunity that his current nursery was not interested in pursuing.  He ran with his idea and started his own
business.

Bill bought the business from his father in 1983, and
followed a generational transition plan to get into the business.   A true
family business, Bill’s wife Sarah is also involved in the business and now the
third generation is doing its part as their son Rick does engineering and
programming expertise with numerous projects and their daughter Jess acts is
the company’s graphic designer.

The current flower nursery now has over five acres of
greenhouses with more than 1,000 varieties of perennials, shrubs, mums, and
ornamental grasses, all grown in earth friendly Coco Pots that are made of
coconut husk fibers (coir) which are biodegradable and can be planted directly
in the ground.
