A new proposal in the Massachusetts Legislature targets the gender wage gap, and could prevent small business owners from using salary history in the hiring process, among other anti-business measures.
H. 1733 would allow employees to talk about their salaries with co-workers, and require employers to include minimum pay in job listings.
The Massachusetts Chapter of the National Organization for Women (Mass NOW) described the bill as business friendly, despite these onerous additions to business owners’ already growing list of regulations.
“The bill’s approach is business-friendly because it has little to no cost to implement, allows employers to gradually achieve pay equity, and it builds on other diversity and pay equity efforts already in place at many companies and organizations,” according to Mass NOW.
The bill remains in the Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development.
