An Update From Your NFIB/Tennessee State Director

Jim Brown encourages small business owners to be active in local government: "Whining isn't winning."

Dear NFIB/Tennessee Members,

Earlier this summer, State Rep. John DeBerry spoke passionately to 45 NFIB members and guests at the Regions Bank in East Memphis. Rep. DeBerry talked about our national identity crisis and threats to our republic, reiterating words from a speech he gave on the House Floor in April.

“Our enemies said more than 50 years ago that they would take this nation without taking a shot. They said they were going to divide us from within. They were going to make us destroy ourselves. And the way to do that was to make us forget who we are … and what we fight for and stand for. Good gracious alive, won’t you stand for something, stand for something, and stop falling for everything!?”

This message resonated with everyone in attendance, in light of the ongoing attack on capitalism, free markets and entrepreneurship. Business owners stood up and said they’re tired of being “harassed by a government that acts like an enemy.” Some wondered aloud what can be done, to which DeBerry suggested healthy “unrest.”

With the expanse of unchecked powers in the executive and judicial branches, NFIB members in Tennessee have never been more alarmed about threats to their business. Rest assured, NFIB will continue to fight tooth and nail against the many threats to your business and livelihood. That said, I encourage more direct activism from each of you. Much more. Whining isn’t winning. Your business’s survival may depend on it.

Keep fighting, stay positive and never give up. Support more John DeBerry’s and those who understand what you and your business mean to your communities and our still-great nation. Support reforms that get business off your back. And spread the word.

Jim Brown
