The 20% Small Business Tax Deduction is set to expire at the end of the year, and nine out of 10 small businesses will face a massive tax hike. Making this deduction permanent is NFIB’s top priority. According to a new poll released by NFIB’s Research Center, there is broad bipartisan support for keeping the Small Business Deduction in the tax code. Small business owners from New Jersey, South Carolina, and Texas wrote opinion pieces in their local newspapers about the importance of the deduction and how they use it to benefit their business and community.
NFIB member Joe Mastalia of New Jersey published an op-ed in the Daily Journal on what he has been able to do with the deduction: “As soon as we got that 20% deduction, we turned around and reinvested the savings. We invested in new equipment as well as our employees’ compensation. Without the tax cut, we couldn’t have done any of that. It has helped us grow and make a bigger difference in our community.”
The Post and Courier published an op-ed from NFIB member and small business owner Michael Snyder of South Carolina on the importance of the Deduction: “And I won’t be the only one making tough choices. Thousands of small businesses across South Carolina—and millions across America—will be looking at their finances and concluding they have to cut back, too. I can’t imagine anything worse for our economy. We’ll have fewer jobs, weaker Main Streets, and less of the entrepreneurship that moves America forward.”
NFIB member Jason Denton published an op-ed in The Dallas Morning News about how his business has grown because of this deduction: “Within a year of the tax cut, we hired our first employee. Now, we have 12 people. We’ve devoted a big portion of our savings to raises and benefits, which helps us attract workers who would otherwise go to bigger competitors. And we’ve spent tens of thousands of dollars on cutting-edge equipment, including an advanced help desk system and a scanner that helps us pinpoint where our customers should put Wi-Fi routers to maximize coverage. That precision is key to helping us stay ahead of competitors.”
