Property Tax Cuts Top Priority for Small Business in 2025

TOPEKA (Jan. 13, 2025) – Ahead of the Kansas Legislature’s 2025 session, state members of the National Federation of Independent Business strongly support property tax cuts, according to NFIB’s annual survey. More than eighty-eight percent of NFIB members support reducing the statewide property tax mill levy.

“Reducing Kansans’ tax burden is top of mind for small business owners, particularly when it comes to our state’s property taxes,” NFIB State Director Dan Murray said. “As Main Street continues to grapple with inflation, it’s incumbent on lawmakers to make our state’s tax code competitive with neighboring states and prioritize economic growth. Cutting taxes, ensuring greater transparency in our judicial system, and reducing the regulatory burden on start-up businesses, would allow our family-owned businesses to do more of what they do best: invest in their employees, create new jobs, and keep our communities thriving. We will continue working with lawmakers to ensure Kansas remains a great place to own a small business.”

The survey also found:

  • Eighty-six percent believe Kansas should require the disclosure of third parties with financial interest in litigation, while five percent are opposed, and twenty-one percent are undecided.
  • Sixty-two percent support waiving fines and penalties for first-time regulatory errors, while seventeen percent are opposed, and twenty percent are undecided.

The Kansas Legislature convenes today, January 13, 2025.
