Unemployment Agency to Reinstate “Work Search” Requirement

Date: May 19, 2021

Claimants must now prove they are seeking work.

After hearing from small business owners and NFIB, the state Unemployment Agency pledged to reinstate the “work search” requirement as a condition of receiving unemployment benefits. The House Government Operations Committee held a hearing in April of 2021 on the Agency’s refusal to enforce the requirement to search for work when an out of work claimant is collecting unemployment benefits. The legislature reinstated the requirement in October of 2020. NFIB members told the Committee that it was challenging enough to find workers when they are being incentivized by numerous government programs to stay home and it doesn’t help when no one seems to know whether they are required to look for work as a condition of receiving unemployment benefits.
