Montana Ad Campaign for the Small Business Deduction Launched

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Ronda Wiggers, Montana State Director, rondakwiggers@gmail.com or Tony Malandra, Senior Media Manager, anthony.malandra@nfib.org HELENA, Mont., Aug. 10, 2023—The nation’s leading small-business association today launched radio ads in the Billings market with accompanying social media posts throughout the state asking U.S. Sen. Jon Tester to support the Main Street Tax Certainty Act, which aims to keep the Small Business Deduction from expiring in 2025. The 20% Small Business Deduction (Section 199A) allows pass-through small businesses the ability to deduct up to 20% of qualified business income. “If Congress takes no action, the 20% Small Business Deduction will expire in 2025, imposing a massive tax hike on a majority of America’s small businesses. While Members of Congress are back in their states and districts in August, small business owners want them to understand the importance of making the 20% Small Business Deduction permanent,” said Brad Close, NFIB President. “Despite economic headwinds, small employers are poised to lead an economic comeback, and Congress has an opportunity to provide much-needed tax certainty, allowing them to grow and invest in their businesses. We are encouraged that this important legislation has been introduced in both the U.S. Senate and House and urge Congress to pass it this Congress.” The Act was introduced in the U.S. Senate by Tester’s fellow Montanan, Sen. Steve Daines. An accompanying bipartisan House measure was introduced by Reps. Lloyd Smucker (R-PA) and Henry Cuellar (D-TX). More about both bills and why the Act is vital for America’s small businesses can be read from this NFIB news release. “Before the pandemic struck, our economy was performing the best it ever had, thanks to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, of which the Small Business Deduction, I believe, was its most important element,” said Ronda Wiggers, Montana State Director for the National Federation of Independent (NFIB), which successfully lobbied for the deduction’s inclusion in the Act and which today launched the ad campaign. “What irritates me is that all the economy-spurring benefits given to big businesses and large corporations were made permanent, but the Small Business Deduction was given until 2025 before expiring. This is wrong. I’m proud a Montanan introduced the right corrective, and I’d be even prouder if our other senator joined him. This would send a message across the nation that Montana is serious about the health and welfare of its small businesses.” The 30-second radio can be heard here.
