How to Drive Customers to Your Website

Date: November 14, 2014

Four small tweaks can optimize your company’s website.

Even minor additions to your search engine optimization plan can significantly boost your website’s viewership. Jonathan Gilde, an account manager at San Diego-based Internet marketing company BrightHaus, explains how:

1. Refine keywords

The most common problem Gilde notices with small businesses is misuse of metadata and descriptions. Use at least 300 to 400 words of original, high-quality content on the main page, and incorporate common search phrases on your website’s main pages and in your title tags, meta descriptions and heading tags.

2. Be geo-specific

Include terms related to your geographical area of operation in your keywords.

3. Complete site maps and robot files

These Web dashboard tools help direct search engines to your website. Site maps are a list of pages that are accessible to search engine crawlers. Robot files prevent crawlers from reading certain pages of your website, allowing you to assign priority to the most important pages.

4. Get on Google+

More search engines are picking up your social networking signals. “Google is the most widely used search engine,” Gilde says. “Business owners can ensure they are getting maximum visibility by registering their business.” Engage with other users to boost your ranking.
