“Paycheck Protection” reforms stall in PA Senate
In the last election cycle,
Pennsylvania’s public employee unions gave more than $10.5 million to political
candidates. They spent millions more from union dues to engage in
political activity, including contributions to SuperPACs which run campaign ads
either supporting or attacking certain candidates. All of this money was
used to support big-government candidates who advocate policies that are
devastating to taxpayers and private business growth.
What’s worse? The unions
didn’t even have to collect all those millions of dollars from their members
–the taxpayers handled the task for them. That’s because the state
automatically deducts union dues, fees, and political contributions from
employee paychecks. This is plain wrong. Taxpayers should NEVER
be funding ANY political activity.
Like the majority of
Pennsylvanians, NFIB has long opposed state resources being used for political
purposes. We further believe that workers should be free to make their
own decisions about the organizations and political activities to which they
give their money – it’s the American way!
One of two “Paycheck
Protection” bills that would end the practice of using government
resources to collect political money, SB 501, ran into a roadblock in the Senate this week. An amendment aimed at improving the bill failed to receive enough votes to move the process forward. Further action on that amendment will now be scheduled at a later date. There is also another bill, SB 500 introduced by Senator Scott Wagner (R-York)
which also has been reported out of committee. A similar bill, HB 238, has
been introduced by Rep. Bryan Cutler in the House.
NFIB encourages its members to
call their elected officials and tell them to pass Paycheck Protection.
