Talk of higher taxes, regional reopening, and all vote by mail
State Budget and Possble Tax Increases
On August 25, Governor Murphy will deliver his 9-month budget for State Fiscal Year 2021. The Legislature needs to pass the budget by September 30. The time after Labor Day promises to be busy as tax increases are likely—a great concern for small businesses. It is anticipated that the millionaire’s tax and other fees and taxes will be included in the Governor’s Budget address.
Reopen the State Regionally?
This week the Assembly Commerce and Economic Development Committee held a hearing on the benefits of a regionalized reopening strategy for businesses. Some businesses remain closed or highly limited in their operations six months into the pandemic. The Legislature recognized the benefits of following different procedures of reopening for South Jersey and North Jersey, but the Governor’s Executive Order supersedes their efforts. So, the seemingly unfair and stalled reopening process remains in place. One has to ask why is it okay to open schools, or allow certain sports, but safely opening gyms or allowing indoor dining again is off the table.
Election Changes
Per Gov. Phil Murphy’s Executive Order 177, November 3 will be an all vote by mail General Election. Every active voter will receive a prepaid postage vote by mail ballot. But voters can also go to polling locations and fill out a provisional paper ballot. NFIB encourages its members to be a #SmallBizVoter.
