Unemployment for Independent Contractors in Massachusetts

Date: April 23, 2020

How to apply

NFIB wants to be sure our members who are independent contractors, freelancers, self-employed, or gig workers know that they can apply for unemployment benefits under the new Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) recently passed by Congress. In Massachusetts, there is a website set up expressly for that purpose. https://www.mass.gov/how-to/apply-for-pandemic-unemployment-assistance

Before filing a claim, there are documents you will need that include identification, information about dependents, and various records related to previous wages. The list of what you need is on the state’s webpage. You are asked to apply for benefits retroactive to your first week of total or partial unemployment related to the COVID-19 pandemic. It says most claims will be processed within 21-28 days and but can be completed within the first week.

We wish you and your family well over the coming months as our organization works on your behalf in Washington, D.C., and your state capital during this difficult time
