Update on Massachusetts Health Assessment

Date: January 03, 2018

This is a reminder to all small business owners that the new healthcare assessment and unemployment rate schedule take effect on January 1, 2018.

For employers with 6 or more employees who currently pay $51 per worker for the Employer Medical Assistance Contribution (EMAC) as part of their UI payment, that rate will increase to $77 for 2018 and 2019.

If an employer with 6 or more employees has a non-disabled worker receiving MassHealth or subsidized coverage through the Massachusetts Health Connector they will be assessed a maximum payment of $750 per subsidized employee.

While the payments are based on wages paid starting on 1/1/2018, employers will not receive their first bill until April when Unemployment Insurance payments are due.

In addition, the UI rate schedule will not jump from schedule C to F as originally planned. Instead, the UI rate schedule will increase from schedule C to schedule D in 2018 and from schedule D to schedule E in 2019.
