NFIB Statement on Failure to Call Critical Small Business Bill for Final Vote

Date: May 31, 2021

NFIB State Director Annie Spilman released the following statement today in response to the Legislature’s failure to call Senate Bill 14 for a final vote. The bill would have helped small businesses by stopping local governments from imposing their own employment rules and regulations:

“Small business owners are deeply disappointed and frustrated by our elected leaders for allowing partisan politics and one-upmanship to block the final passage of this incredibly important bill. Small business owners are still trying to recover from the pandemic and don’t have the time or the resources to navigate a confusing and contradictory patchwork of local ordinances that go beyond what state and federal law requires.

“This remains a critical issue for small businesses, and we urge Governor Abbott to include the measure in his expected call for a special session.”
