Tualatin/West Linn lawmaker honored for her commitment to Main Street

SALEM, Ore., Oct. 1, 2018—NFIB, the nation’s largest and leading small-business association, today announced Rep. Julie Parrish as the recipient of its 2017-2018 Guardian of Small Business award.
The NFIB Guardian of Small Business Award is presented to legislators who truly vote as champions of small business. Those who earn this recognition have been staunch supporters on the issues that are crucial to the success of Oregon’s small business, such as tax relief, regulatory reform, and keeping health care affordable.
“In the Oregon Legislature, it’s hard to find a more outspoken advocate for small businesses than Rep. Julie Parrish,” said Anthony K. Smith, NFIB’s Oregon state director. “Oregon small businesses, and especially the small businesses in her district, are always a top priority. With real-life experience as a small-business owner herself, it’s fitting that she would score a perfect 100 percent on her 2017-2018 NFIB Voting Record.”
According to Smith, who presented Parrish with her Guardian of Small Business award alongside West Linn resident and NFIB Oregon Leadership Council Vice-chair, Jan Kaiser, the representative was particularly helpful in educating her colleagues about how business taxes really work – and how small businesses struggle to make ends meet when government increases costs without regard for their ability to pay more.
Representative Parrish also recently led the fight to protect small businesses from unfair health insurance taxes, drawing attention to the fact that while big corporations can self-insure and avoid paying these taxes, small businesses cannot, and are left to pay full price for their health care, in addition to the new tax.
“I am honored to receive the Guardian award from NFIB. Their members are some of the hardest-working Oregonians, and yet year-over-year, the Legislature increases their tax and regulatory burden, while exempting large corporate special interests. As a business owner, I’m proud to stand with our job creators and appreciate the work they do to hire their neighbors and contribute to our communities,” stated Representative Parrish.
Parrish, whose district includes Tualatin and West Linn, was one of only 18 current state representatives with a 100-percent, pro-small-business voting record during the 2017 and 2018 sessions of the Legislature.
