Maryland Minimum Wage Hike and Local Bag Bans Went into Effect January 1st

Date: December 18, 2023

Law changes that may impact your business in 2024

The new year brought some changes that will likely impact many small business owners in Maryland. Effective January 1, 2024, the state’s minimum wage rose to $15 per hour for ALL employers regardless of size. This comes after the General Assembly passed SB555 during the 2023 legislative session. The law phases in the state’s minimum wage to $15 per hour ahead of a previously agreed upon timeline and repeals a provision that allowed smaller businesses with 14 or fewer employees more time to reach $15. Two local jurisdictions also had bag bans take effect on January 1. Prince George’s County and Anne Arundel County passed similar ordinances earlier this year that place restrictions on carryout bags and what retailers must do moving forward.
