On April 11th, NFIB hosted a virtual member event on Maine’s new, expansive Paid Family & Medical Leave (PFML) law. State Director David Clough gave an informative presentation for members, reviewing the significant additions to current law, and then focusing on the ongoing process of rulemaking for compliance. This timely event provided members the latest developments as to what small business owners can expect going forward.

David was joined by Reggie Parson, deputy director for Maine Paid Family & Medical Leave Program with the Department of Labor, to discuss the law, the rulemaking process, employer expenses and administrative duties, important deadlines, and more.

With PFML now law in Maine, every employer, regardless of size, and every employee, regardless of status, will be affected. Additionally, self-employed people will have access for the first time to a workplace benefit. While benefits won’t begin until 2026, it’s important to be aware now of what to expect and when.
