Dawn Starns, state director of the National Federation of Independent Business, made the following statement today in response to Governor Edwards’ call for a special session of the legislature:
“Our members understand the value of the necessary services provided by state government, but they also believe the legislature and Governor Edwards should follow the example of small business and learn to live within their means.
“Small-business owners recognize that there are structural challenges to our budget, but they also believe that now is the time to make reductions to the cost of running state government and prioritize spending. To that end, our members think the governor and legislature should be mindful about how they go about raising revenues. We’re asking the legislature to be concise with its approach to raising revenues so that small business isn’t hit with a multitude of new taxes.
“Before legislators sign off on any tax increase, our members want them to be absolutely sure they’re not wasting a penny of the tax dollars the state already collects.”
