NFIB to Testify in Support of Consistent Employment Regulations Act

Date: February 27, 2019

NFIB’s state director for Texas, Annie Spilman, will go before the Senate State Affairs Committee at 9 a.m. Thursday to testify in support of Senate Bill 15. The measure, one of NFIB’s top priorities this session, would stop local governments from mandating their own employment rules and regulations.

“Small businesses don’t have the time or resources to navigate a confusing and contradictory patchwork of local ordinances that go above and beyond what state law requires,” Spilman said.

Gov. Greg Abbott announced the filing of S.B. 15 early this month at NFIB’s Small Business Day at the Capitol. The bill is sponsored by Sen. Brandon Creighton.

“Small business needs predictability and consistency,” Spilman said. “When cities and counties impose their own cumbersome and costly rules on top of state regulations, it creates confusion for small businesses with mobile employees or operations in multiple jurisdictions.

“It can also put small businesses at a competitive disadvantage if firms in neighboring cities don’t have the same regulatory burdens,” Spilman said. “That’s why we’re asking the committee to vote ‘yes’ on Senate Bill 15.”
