NFIB Applauds VA Senate For Voting Against Wage Increase

Date: January 21, 2019

NFIB’s state director for Virginia, Nicole Riley, today praised the Senate for voting down legislation that would have doubled Virginia’s minimum wage.

“Senate Bill 1200 would have had terrible, unintended consequences on small businesses and their employees,” Riley said. If passed, the measure would have raised the state minimum wage from $7.25 an hour today to $15 an hour in 2021.

“Employers would have had to make a tough decision to either raise prices to cover the higher cost of labor or get by with fewer employees on the payroll,” Riley said.

“Today’s vote is a sign the Senate understands all sides of this difficult issue,” Riley said. “On behalf of our members, I urge the General Assembly to look for solutions that would make it easier for small businesses to grow and create jobs.”
