CARSON CITY, Nev., Jan. 30, 2019—One result from a poll of Nevada small-business owners released today shows they haven’t forgotten the deal the Legislature made with them, and want the new Legislature, which opens for business next week, to follow through on it.

As it does every year, NFIB, the nation’s and Nevada’s leading small-business association, polls its members on state and federal issues affecting their right to own, operate, and grow their businesses. Results from the annual poll center NFIB’s lobbying positions in Carson City and in Washington, D.C. The 2019 Nevada state member ballot asked four questions.

Should the Nevada Legislature reduce the payroll tax rate?
Yes—91 percent
No—2 percent
Und.—7 percent

“The 2015 Nevada Legislature imposed higher taxes on businesses, but it made a deal that if revenue from the Modified Business Tax, the Commerce Tax, and the Bank Excise tax exceeds 4 percent, the payroll tax rate must automatically decrease,” said Randi Thompson, NFIB’s Nevada state director. “It appears that the incoming Legislature may break that deal.”

Results from the other three questions were:

Should Nevada require each resident to carry health insurance or pay a penalty?
Yes—9 percent
No—88 percent
Und.—3 percent

Do you support legislation allowing sole proprietors and employers who do not offer an employer-sponsored retirement plan to participate in a Nevada-sponsored retirement account?
Yes—34 percent
No—56 percent
Und.—10 percent

Should the legislature change the overtimes law to allow employers to pay overtime based on 40 hours worked during the week, rather than an eight-hour day?
Yes—89 percent
No—4 percent
Und.—7 percent
