After court battle, what Indiana small business owners need to know about federal unemployment benefits

The summer has been a confusing time for small business owners who are trying to navigate the federal pandemic unemployment program and trying to determine if their employees are eligible for the money from the federal government.  

First Gov. Eric Holcomb ended the program. Then a court overturned his decision. And now an appellate court has sided with the governor. 

Here’s what you need to know:

The Indiana Court of Appeals reversed a lower court’s ruling that required Holcomb and the Department of Workforce Development to provide federal pandemic benefits.

In June, Gov. Holcomb tried to pull Indiana out of the federal unemployment program, citing increasing opportunities to land a job in Indiana. A lower court, however, stopped him. 

The Department of Workforce Development has to provide 30 days notice to claimants before ending the program. The payments already were set to run out Sept. 4. That means benefits will continue through Sept. 4, as previously scheduled.
