Mark Grant, NFIB’s state director for Illinois, released the following statement today in response to Senate approval of Senate Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment No. 1, Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s progressive tax plan:
“Our members are disappointed but hardly surprised that the resolution cleared the Senate. Our members understand the state must do something to fix Illinois’ financial crisis, but raising taxes isn’t it. The fact of the matter is that Governor Pritzker’s progressive tax is going to hurt small businesses – and their employees. The fact of the matter is that higher tax bills mean less money to grow businesses and pay current employees, let alone hire additional ones.
“Our members also are concerned about how state officials will spend their tax dollars. Our members find it hard to believe that the same lawmakers and bureaucrats who got us into this mess can get us out of it simply by raising taxes.
“Our members are asking the House to put the brakes on this bad idea and work with the business community on a solution that addresses the state’s budget shortfall without making it even harder to do business in the State of Illinois.”
