Paid Sick Leave Legislation Returns

Date: April 16, 2019

Paid sick leave legislation returned on Friday, this time as Amendment 1 to Senate Bill 471. The original bill, which had moved to third reading in the Senate, was gutted and replaced.

If passed, the legislation would mandate all employers provide five paid sick days per year for every employee. Employees would gain one hour of sick time for every 40 hours they work. This would interfere with existing benefits provided by employers.

NFIB opposes the legislation.

Here’s a look at what’s happening with other bills affecting Illinois’ small businesses:

HB 834, a bill that prohibits employers from asking potential employees about their past wage and salaries, passed the House 86-28 and is in the Senate. NFIB opposes.

HB 252, a bill that changes the Illinois Human Rights Act workplace laws to apply to all employers, not just those with 15 or more workers, passed the House 74-44 and is now in the Senate. NFIB opposes.

SB 1596, a bill that expands civil liability on business by going around the WC system on asbestos (and potentially other long-term work-related illnesses) cases that date back beyond the 25 years repose for workers’ compensation cases passed both houses and is awaiting Governor Pritzker’s signature. NFIB opposed the bill.
