NFIB Urges Senate Panel to Reject Pritzker's Progressive Tax Plan

Date: April 10, 2019

NFIB is urging the Senate Executive Committee to reject Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s proposed progressive income tax plan today.

“There is nothing fair about this proposal. It is a thinly disguised tax hike that it supposedly only on the wealthy,” NFIB State Director Mark Grant said. “Taxpayers in Illinois have been bamboozled the last decade, told that the income tax hikes would solve state financial woes. That has not come to pass. This is another way for big government spenders to get their hands on more taxpayers dollars.”

Most small business owners pay income taxes at the individual rate rather than the corporate rate.

To change Illinois’ tax code, it takes a state constitutional amendment. The House and Senate must pass the measure by a three-fifths majority before it goes to voters on the ballot in the 2020 general election.

“We believe the Legislature should look for ways to address Illinois’s financial problems without hurting working families and small businesses.”
