Illinois Considers Paid Sick Leave

Date: June 05, 2019

A committee is set to discuss a measure to require paid sick leave.

A recently proposed measure would require Illinois employers to give employees paid sick leave, according to The Center Square.

NFIB’s State Director Mark Grant said NFIB opposes the bill but hopes to amend it by exempting small businesses with fewer employees from the requirement.  “Right now, we’re asking for 25 (employees) or under,” Grant said. “I don’t know if any will get exempted.”

Rep. Jehan Gordon-Booth sponsored the measure, and Grant said he is eager to sit down with Gordon-Booth to discuss changes to the proposed legislation.

Additionally, a separate measure, called The Employee Background Fairness Act, was proposed to regulate how employers use background checks. This bill would prohibit employers from considering juvenile records, participation in diversion and deferral programs that aren’t considered criminal records but still show up on background checks, or any infractions less than a misdemeanor.

NFIB is also opposed to this legislation. Grant says it is concerning for business owners. “If you follow all the rules yet something happens that you aren’t ready for as a business owner, you can be held liable for it,” Grant said.
