Florida's Legislative Session Goes Into Overtime

Date: May 01, 2019

The final days of the 2019 Legislative Session are upon us, but a small delay in the compiling of the state budget will send us into overtime. The only bill constitutionally mandated to be passed during session, the budget was finalized Wednesday afternoon and requires a 72-hour cooling-off period before legislators can cast their final vote on it. That means the House and Senate will be returning to the Capitol on Saturday and voting on the budget as early as 1:30 pm.

The tax cut package is part of the final negotiations, and we remain laser focused on ensuring the biggest reduction in the Business Rent Tax possible. All indications point to small businesses receiving rent tax relief as part of the package, and NFIB will be working hard to push it over the finish line.

We’re keeping a close eye out for signs that the legislature is ready to vote on the budget. Until then, we are checking amendments filed in real-time as legislators make their last-ditch efforts to get new and recycled legislative language through the process. This is the time of year that labor unions and trial lawyers try to slip in anti-small business amendments, and we are working round the clock to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Be on the lookout for updates on the final budget proposal and Sine Die, and as always, thank you for taking the time to stay informed.
